Mundwad Shawl and Stoles Group is Now a member of ‘A Hundred Hands’!

A Hundred Hands is a non-profit that supports handmade arts and crafts, so they can earn a fair and sustainable livelihood from their work. Mundwad Shawls and Stoles group is now a member. They will also be participating in their annual exhibition, ‘The Handmade Collective’. It is a 5 day event and the Mundwad women will be present there to showcase and market their
work.

Karakushala Kendras in the villages of Haliyal

• The enterprise works under the ambit of SHG.

The women in Haliyal have several skills which includes specialised hand embroidery, crochet and quilting among several other handicrafts. Many of these skills are handed down from elders while some are acquired by women during their life’s journey.

Sugarcane Bud Nursery

The sugar cane bud nursery in Mundwad is the first step towards setting up agro- allied livelihood groups in Haliyal. Haliyal being part of sugarcane cultivation belt, offers bright opportunity to women to earn regular income from growing and selling sugarcane buds.

Shahnaz Begum had thought of herself as just another resident of Mundwad Village who had lived with her now-retired army-man husband in various parts of India while he served the nation, and who would now live out the rest of her life in her village, hopefully in peace, and certainly in anonymity. But that was before CherYsh did a Skills Mapping exercise in her village and discovered, quite by chance, that she had expertise in ‘Khila Work’ – a tapestry technique using nail and board to weave strips and squares.

CherYsh is committed to promoting entrepreneurial opportunities for rural women in Haliyal by identifying skills to develop their potential in rural home-based industries. CherYsh has generated livelihood opportunities for rural women through Kitchens that produce dry spice mixes and supplies to local markets. By offering them access to the right resources, CherYsh has turned rural women into entrepreneurs and empowered them through home industries. Today women in Haliyal are producing, packaging and earning from steady supplies of spice mixes to local enterprises like the Akshay Patra and EID Parry.

Community Kitchen Products at Haliyal Utsav

At the Shivaji Stadium in Haliyal, the enthusiasm was palpable. So were the colours, the aromas, the buzz of the Karavali communities who gathered to celebrate the annual Haliyal Utsav. A year-end tradition since the last five years, the Haliyal Utsav brings together villages from the coastal areas of Karnataka in a fun fair that showcases their vibrant communities. This year the women of CherYsh Community Kitchen were proud participants in the Haliyal Utsav. Serve And Lead Training (SaLT): Skilling for Entrepreneurship

Continuous learning and skill enhancement was delivered through the SaLT session. Mr. Chandrasekariah, experienced Trainer from Buzz India, delivered the sessions on financial literacy. The sessions gave women greater insight, and practical skills to understand basics of enterprise, qualities of an entrepreneur, family budgeting, receipts and payments, financial goal setting, loan management and so on.

Community Kitchens – Geared up

Women of Community Kitchens earned a regular income from sale of food products. Their scheduled deliveries continued with supply to the CherYsh Shikshas, and the EID Parry factory canteens. A woman from the village, tailored the new gear worn by women, opening a new line of skill work linked to the Community Kitchens. A new plan to expand the order base in being developed for the financial year 2017-18.

The Serve and Lead Training: Experience of client engagement

A feedback system was instituted by CherYsh to enable women to engage directly with the buyer on aspects of quality. The Canteen Manager and staff at the local sugar factory of the EID Parry group, welcomed women of the Community Kitchens to their conference room. The factory team conveyed that workers eating at the canteen had appreciated the “home-made” and “tasteful” flavor, also that the products were “unadulterated”.

Economic Empowerment of Rural Women

The SaLT session for women of the Community Kitchens included training on using, and conserving, energy via fuel-efficient cooking stoves.

In addition a SaLT session was delivered by staff of the Gateway Lakeside to support women of the Community Kitchens with information on quality, storage, new snack recipes, recipes for pickles, and elements of packaging.
